Looking for the Collared Pratincole

On the 25th of June we left around 09.00 AM from Ronda to have a look at a birding site where last year we found several breeding pairs of Collared Pratincole. Maybe we will be lucky again.

It is a site close to Merchena, which is also a good place for other species as Roller, Lesser Kestrel, the various Eagle species and Great and Little Bustard. Coming from the direccion Osuna we were a little bit unlucky, because a lot of road work was going on, and normally all this hazzle is not helping the birder a lot.

When we were looking at a small pond at an Avocet which landed just in front of us, we were stopped by a local guardian, also using a pair of binoculars, probably not to look for birds but for illegal hunters. After this interesting stop, where we also had our first Collared Pratincole to come for a drink we continued our way to Merchena. We were lucky to get good views of the Roller. We saw several Rollers but we did not take all the time we might have needed to really get some very good Photos. Arriving at the place we remembered from last year we immediately saw several Pratincoles flying around. And scanning the place a bit better confirmed us that there are at least 20 pairs breeding in the nearby fields.

Some information about the Pratincole.
The Collared Pratincole or Common Pratincole, is a wader in the pratincole family, Glareolidae.
Pratincoles are unusual among waders in that they typically hunt their insect prey on the wing like swallows, although they can also feed on the ground. The Collared Pratincole is a bird of open country, and is often seen near water in the evening, hawking for insects. It is found in the warmer parts of Europe, southwest Asia and Africa. Its 2- 4 eggs are laid on the ground. It is migratory, wintering in tropical Africa, and is rare north of the breeding range. It is 24-28 cm long with a 60-70 cm wingspan. The Collared Pratincole is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
